Had to track to myself today. Anddd I boiled the brakes on the third lap.

Time to upgrade the fluid?

Better fluid and better brake cooling (if possible on a C5Z) Maybe better lines?

Moving up to a better fluid next time out?

I boiled the brake fluid on my old Crown Vic.

Did you bleed the brakes before the track day? I’ve made it a habit. Losing the brakes is a bit terrifying.

As a general rule, if you’re actually running hard, then any brakes that you can drive to the track on will be insufficient on the track. You’ll need some functional ducting to run a Z06 on the track.

As a general rule, brake fluid doesn’t care if it’s on the street or track.

I’ve never had issues with the brakes on my C5Z on Road Atlanta or AMP. What are you basing your conclusions on?

No clue what that person is talking about

A lot of years playing with racecars, a lot of years instructing on track and pleanty of years turning wrenches in a race shop. Considering stock C5zs didn’t survive short 30 minute lapping sessions at the small, local track back in the day without cooking the brakes and puking power steering fluid, that sounds pretty impressive at Road Atlanta. Back in the day, some of the T1 class guys with Z06s had problems with caliper spread, even with pretty substantial ducting to the front.
The only cars I ever saw with streetable brakes that could withstand extended track use were things with carbon ceramic rotors that cost many dollars.

I am only running stainless steel lines and Hawk pads. If I’m completely honest, I also made the switch to Castrol SRF when I was going to the track pretty frequently ;) Went back to a DOT 4 racing fluid by AMS with the most recent flush because I’m hoping to sell pretty soon (and it was quite a bit cheaper. lol).

That’s cool if that works for you! My original (and poorly articulated) point was that boiling fluid is often a symptom of a bigger brake cooling problem and not the problem itself. I’m actually not a fan of a lot of the high dollar/ super high temp brake fluids for fendered cars, because I’ve seen front calipers get hot enough melt o-rings in them yet the fluid itself never boiled. When that happens the driver doesn’t know there is problem until the master cylinder is empty and the pedal goes to the floor. My personal perspective is that if you need much more than ATE blue/typ 2000, there are bigger brake cooling issues that need to be addressed.

I went straight to the SRF because it came highly recommended. Didn’t have boiling issues before that

Or you know, I knew I was pushing it by running the fluid for a 3rd event on the same fluid. It’s a membership track, I get more track time than I could ever use. Which also means I don’t always have time to bleed them each and every day I go out there. So if I lose a day early, it’s really not a big deal.

How much does a membership track run, and what do you get for it?

The one near me is a one time $250 fee and then $550 a year or $300 a year if you live more than 70 miles from the track.
There’s usually at least one full day Saturday of driving and two to three half days a month, April to October.

Wow! That’s cheap track time. I was guessing there would be another zero behind those numbers. I would’ve been all over something like that if it had existed when I was developing the car. It would’ve been a way better deal than risking my life in the passenger seat of people’s street cars as an instructor for a couple of years in exchange for free track time. What rules do you have to play by?
![]() 07/08/2017 at 16:33 |

Passing zones only with a point by for everyone. Beyond that it’s pretty much show up and drive.

That’s what I was guessing for rules. That is a killer deal on track time.

How do you feel about the back of your car....hard brakes on the end of the straight. I feel like I could pick the back end of the car up with my finger. Xp12/10 here with 14" 6 puck Baer front and c6 z51 rear.

It feels fine. What are you running for tires? I’ve only had it a couple months, before that all my experience has been in a FWD car.
